Economic boom opens new doors

TIM FITZGERALD /  VERNON MORNING STAR    Sunday, April 9, 2006

As the economic boom in the Okanagan radically alters the landscape of the area, Bill Wood is looking to keep up with the times.
As the owner of Paragon Maintenance, Wood has been busy expanding his services to meet the changing dynamic of the Okanagan.
Wood is now offering this services to the growing number of vacation property owners who spend little time at their second residence.
"Because of insurance purposes, the properties need to be maintained," said Wood, who started his business with the help of Community Futures Development Corporation of the North Okanagan. "Peace of mind is the biggest factor. People want to know their investments are protected."
Fully bonded and insured, Wood offers a fully contracted service to clients that alleviates the stress that can go with leaving a property vacant for long stretches at a time. Wood said the opportunity is a perfect way to expand on a client base that already includes Community Futures and a pair of ICBC buildings in Vernon.

Business takes advantage of market

TYLER OLSON /  VERNON MORNING STAR    Sunday, January 28, 2007

Laid off from his hotel maintenance job, Bill Wood was at a job search seminar when one of the instructors incredulously asked, "Why don't you start your own business?"
With a diverse background in mechanical, small engine and plumbing maintenance, Wood has the skills to head out on his own.
Now, six years after starting Paragon Maintenance, he has taken advantage of the burgeoning housing market by adding residential maintenance to his repertoire.
"About six months ago I had a phone call from a realtor to look after a vacant home."
He said the response has been great, although he has been surprised by one thing: "You know what amazes me the most is most people don't know they can't leave their houses vacant," he said noting that most home insurance plans require regular visits.
